From The Heart / Desde El Corazón

I LOVE MUSIC, I LOVE DANCING TO IT, I LOVE SHARING IT WITH PEOPLE WHO APPRECIATE IT, I LOVE COLLECTING IT, I LOVE THE CRACKLES ON RECORDS WHICH HAVE BEEN ON THIS PLANET LONGER THAN I HAVE...

THAT is why I DJ,
THAT is why I buy records,
THAT is why I dance,
THAT is why I consider myself a B-Boy!

So many arrogant, ignorant and negative comments in the world of B-Boyin which makes me wonder how many of my compatriotes feel the same way I do.  The way up is not to put others down!

Amazing night in Marula playing soul, funk, salsa, breaks, jazz, disco, afro funk and even bolero off my dusty old records to a packed house, shit was simplemente BANANAS!!!

"This music is real, created by musicians who passionately believe in their art. We don't play to make ourselves rich, we play because we are driven by something that is much greater that us"

Feeling very blessed to live the life I live, simply put: MUSIC IS MY LIFE!!!

Something That Means Something / Algo Profundo

"I'll guess I'd have to say, this album is dedicated to you, although, perhaps, I may not have been happy, this is what you wanted, so I've conceded, I hope it makes you happy..." are the opening lines of one of the deepest, heart wrenching, soul moving, brilliant albums which I've ever had the fortune to own / listen to.  The year was 1978, the event was the divorce of Marvin Gaye and Anna Gordy, the album was "Here, My Dear", the result was profound!

Anna Gordy and Marvin Gaye married in 1964, Anna was the sister of Motown label boss, Berry Gordy, Gaye had recorded for Motown since the early 60's (his first solo LP 'The Soulful Moods Of Marvin Gaye' came out on Motown in 1961 and was only the second LP to come out on Motown).  As part of their divorce settlement Gaye was to give a significant part of the royalties of his next LP to Anna Gordy, the logical thing would be to do a throwaway album, a quick 'in and out' meaningless LP with little commercial appeal that most likely wouldn't sell well.  At some point Gaye decided to spend two years recording a deluxe double LP with gatefold sleeve tearing his ex-wife into pieces, this was indeed Gaye taking out his frustrations in the studio!  The cover art by Michael Bryan is nothing short of spectacular, on the front cover "LOVE AND MARRIAGE", on the back cover "PAIN AND DIVORCE", open up the LP gatefold sleeve to find the 'JUDGEMENT' drawing, a 'Monopoly' game style board, on one side a $1 bill, a piano, music recording equipment and a male hand holding a record and on the other a house, a car, $500 bills, a ring, a skull, a fly, a spider and an wide open female hand.

After 15 years of being actively involved in music, I can't think of another album that has moved me as much as 'Here, My Dear'.  Marvin Pentz Gay Jnr (1939 - 1984) was undoubtably, musically speaking, a genius!  Almost everything the man touched turned to gold whether it be as a singer, songwriter, composer, record producer, arranger, pianist, drummer or percussionist Gaye put his profound touch on soul music.  Rather than post songs from the LP I've decided to just post the album artwork, if you want to hear it you can find the LP in good second hand record shops, the CD in the usual places (there's even a Deluxe Edition with alternative mixes of pretty much all the songs), downloads on itunes and spotify and probably most of the songs on youtube.

With so much music out there that can only be described as 'meaningless superficial bullsh*t' it's truly an experience to sit down and listen to Marvin Gaye pouring out his heart and soul onto 4 sides of black plastic over 73 minutes of listening bliss, not the kind of LP you can flick through, each song telling a story, this is a work of art!

Español:

"I'll guess I'd have to say, this album is dedicated to you, although, perhaps, I may not have been happy, this is what you wanted, so I've conceded, I hope it makes you happy..."
