Selling mixtapes? ¿Vendiendo Mixtapes?

The words of a CD/mp3 ‘DJ’ on the Spanish B-Boy scene (en Español abajo!):

“It’s 2014 & as break DJs we make mixtapes for promotion, it’s always been like that… When I started to get into this music, I bought a DJ Bles One mixtape in the year 2000, which for me was an incredible discovery! Until 2003 even I had to sell some mix tapes, I remember that I sold CDs with 3 mixes “a la carte” for the various musical tastes of the b-boys, who bought them at 5 or 6 euros each, and I did this to pay for trips to competitions as I was just starting out I either wasn’t getting paid or was getting paid small amounts to spin so I had to sort out somewhere to sleep, pay for my food, travel etc etc.

Eleven years later, now in 2014, I think it’s SHAMEFUL that DJs with big names, who get paid well to spin at events, who are not producers, just DJs, who play the music of other people (which they have previously bought, like ALL DJs do) release previews of their mixtapes with slogans such as “next mixtape 5 euros” or “mixtape $10”… If there are real ARTISTS who compose, produce and make their music with “Name your price” on Bandcamp with original recordings then who are you as a DJ to take the work of other people and decide that you can sell it? I’m sorry but in 2014 I think that it’s a DISGRACE to do this when you can share your music, allow free downloads, but to earn money from it? NO! The music is, and should be free, and even more so when you don’t make it”

Time to set the facts straight:

DJs have NEVER made mix tapes for ‘promotion’!!! ‘Hustle’ has always been part of Hip Hop, since block partys DJs have sold mixtapes as a means of getting an extra money together. Where does this money go? Well, in the majority of cases that money goes back into buying records (& sometimes needles, headphones, equipment etc etc). Promotion is a welcome side effect but it has NEVER been the reason anyone who has a name in this game has made a mixtape.

Record buying addictions are not cheap, even if you play off Serato downloads don’t sound the same and let’s face it, if you get deep into digging then what you are buying probably doesn’t exist on mp3. More and more record shops are closing which leaves us with internet buying, postage rates are getting higher and higher, it now costs $19-$21 to post just ONE LP from USA to Europe (never mind the price of the record), and within Europe postage prices aren’t that much cheaper.

‘Real B-boy music’ does not exist, no bands have ever made albums of ‘b-boy music’, we dance on the break which is cut up by the DJ, this is the original & most primitive form of ‘beat making’ or ‘producing’ in Hip Hop. So in effect, when you cut up breaks, you become a ‘producer’. You use other people’s music to create something that did not previously exist, a good DJ will take you on a journey / tell you a story, music is the medium but the journey comes through the manipulation of the emotions of the audience.

Hip Hop as a ‘culture’ is about community and a community will only work if you ‘support those who support you’. People who dedicate their lives to our culture deserve to be rewarded. Respect does not pay rent, records or provide food on the table! Buying mixtapes from REAL DJs this will allow those DJs to buy more records to play for YOU. In 15 years of DJing I guess I’ve owned 4,000 to 5,000 records, which isn’t even that many compared to some people and every week that number gets bigger and bigger.

Too many people within our ‘culture’ complain about having to pay to support people doing things for our culture, how many of us don’t know someone who has complained about having to pay a small amount of money to get into an event, practice spot, workshop or buy a DVD, video, mixtape etc etc when they have no complaints giving away their money for drink, cigarettes, weed, nike, adidas, puma, reebok, mcdonalds etc etc. Music is the very reason we dance (if it isn’t then something is going very wrong) so why wouldn’t you support those who provide the soundtrack to your events, jams, competitions, practice sessions in order to enable them to get new music to play for you?

On a note to the person who wrote the original text: If you have ever been paid money for DJing, but yet try and criticise someone else for doing the same, you are nothing but a hypocrite.

I’d like to finish this with a huge heartfelt thank you to all those who continue to dedicate their lives, time, energy, effort, money to support OUR culture and community by giving something back, whether it be from organising events, teaching workshops, making headspin hats, dancing when they hear music they like, coming up and showing their appreciation for a job well done to sharing a little of their money for something they love. Your positivity and support makes this life worth living
